Our theme is “A House of Prayer.” After his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Jesus spent time teaching in the Temple. In a famous incident, he overturned the tables of the Temple money changers saying, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers’.” (Luke 19:46). What is the purpose of the temple? How can we as disciples spread around the world continue to become a people of the temple? Beyond the Walls – A House of Prayer. Beyond the Walls – Breaking the Cycle Jesus taught us to pray that God’s will may one day be done on earth as it is in heaven. And yet human history reads like an endless cycle of violence and war. This legacy is apparent as we broadcast again this week from Seville, in Andalusia, Spain. Seville is an ancient city that has been conquered in turn by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Vandals, the Visigoths, and the Islamic Caliphate, before its final reconquest by the Christian Kingdom of Castille in 1248. With Spain’s further conquests in the Western hemisphere, the city became the center of the Empire’s trade, as the treasures from the New World poured into the Old. Despite Jesus’ teaching that God’s heavenly kingdom is peaceable, Christians have perpetrated much violence in Christ’s name. We need your help to get these job postings known in our communities. Lifeguards do not have to be members of Community of Christ, however, they do need to be a Registered Youth Worker. If they do not have this certification, we may be able to have them qualified via an online short course before camps begin. February 10, 2023 Terry began his journey to the spirit world on February 10, 2023 at the age of 70. As an artist, musician, friend, storyteller, and as a professor of Indigenous Studies at Nipissing University, he brought gentle kindness and a tricksterish sense of humour to everything he did. Of his many accomplishments, he never let us forget that he was proudest of us, his children Tanis (Allan), Erin (Joseph), Tyler (Christine) and grandchildren Ezmae, Odeima, Ewan, and Niganii. Together we have vowed to him that we will carry on his legacy and do our best, as he did, to exemplify the seven grandfather teachings: Love, Respect, Bravery, Truth, Honesty, Humility and Wisdom. Terry was the dear son of the late Elizabeth Dokis (nee Couchie) and the late John Dokis. Survived by his brothers Jerome and Leslie, he is predeceased by his sister Lillian and brothers Gerald and Ronald. Our family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. O’Grady as well as everyone at the North Bay Serenity Hospice for the gentle and compassionate care given to Terry and to us. We welcome expressions of sympathy in the form of donations to the Hospice and its exceptional team. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Services in North Bay and on Wednesday, February 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Centre at Dokis First Nation. Ceremony and burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. Terry was very instrumental in Indian/Native Ministries at the Native Cultural Camps for youth that were held at Camp Noronto in the 1980's and '90's. Sunday, September 8th, 1929 - Sunday, February 5th, 2023 Passed away peacefully at Strathcona Long Term Care on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at the age of 93. Beloved husband of 66 years of Shirley. Loving father of David and Jay (Ellen). Proud grandfather of Jake (Kaitlin), Breanna (Ryan), Keaton (Mirary) and great-grandfather of Logan, Sadie, Connor and Ava. Predeceased by his sisters Dorothy and Janice and his parents Arthur “Art” and Florence. He will be lovingly remembered by his extended family and friends. Friends and family will be received at the McMillan & Jack Funeral Home, 291 Main Street East, Dundalk on Saturday from 2-5 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, donations to Grey Bruce Health Service – Markdale, Dundalk Fire Department or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. How each congregation achieves that is as unique as the individuals being discipled in that community. How do we bring hope where there is none? How do we address poverty and needless suffering? How do we confront prejudice and greed? How do we share Christ’s gospel of love and peace and justice? How do we find the kernels of wisdom in our common human heritage with one another? Recent services on World Religion Day in London and Barrie, brought together persons from differing faiths who agreed that we need to love and serve one another. It is not an “us” or “them” situation. That if we stop fighting our differences, but instead embrace our common goal, together we can work toward peace and justice. Let’s celebrate some initiatives that individuals within Community of Christ are doing toward that: Teresa Fryer of North Bay recently traveled to El Salvador to teach women how to sew. Her friend Dulcie Shepherdson is there teaching English. Pat MacGregor opened the Sarnia church for donations of clothing and personal care items for the 120 seniors who were abruptly evacuated from their home late one Friday evening in January due to a fire. The community responded abundantly. The St Thomas congregation held a $2 dinner reaching out to community groups with the greatest need. The Woodfield congregation reaches out to bring care packages to individuals who are reintegrating into society after incarceration. “God’s grace, revealed in Jesus Christ, freely moves throughout creation, often beyond human perception, to achieve divine purposes in people’s lives … As revealed in Christ Jesus, God, the creator of all, ultimately is concerned about behaviours and relationships that uphold the worth and giftedness of all people and that protect the most vulnerable. Such relationships are to be rooted in the principles of Christ-like love, mutual respect, responsibility, justice, covenant and faithfulness, against which there is no law (D&C 164:2b,6a) May we all seek to alleviate needless suffering and bring hope where there is none. May we all strive toward relationships that respect and uphold the worth of others. And may we embody peace and justice individually and collectively.
