#GivingTuesdayCA is Next Week!

Hello there,
Giving Tuesday is a worldwide effort to support causes, programs, and organizations we love, and it’s taking place this coming Tuesday, December 1, 2020. This annual event benefits Worldwide Mission Tithes, and we hope you’ll pass these important messages along to your fellow congregants, friends, and loved ones.

Last year (2019) was our best year ever – doubling our previous year’s online contributions. Let’s make 2020 an even bigger success!

Giving options this year include a variety of secure online and mail-in options to suit your needs. We have broken out giving options below into two categories: (1) No fee methods and (2) Other options. You are encouraged to choose the option with which you feel most comfortable.
1. No Fee Methods (Community of Christ receives 100% of your gift)
  • PayPal Giving Fund · eTransfers (Send to heather@communityofchrist.ca with the password: givingtuesday)
  • Mail Cheque (Send cheques to Community of Christ Canada Headquarters, 129-355 Elmira Rd. North, Guelph, ON N1K 1S5. Mark the cheque “Giving Tuesday.”)

2. Other Options (Community of Christ receives most of your gift but incurs a small fee to process the payment)
  • Canada Helps
NOTE: If donating by cheque or eTransfer, email Heather Huffman or call 888-411-7537, ext. 23 at Community of Christ Canada Headquarters to ensure your gift is included in Giving Tuesday totals.

Double the Good
This year a generous matching contribution of $200,000 USD has been pledged for this event. For example, a $25 contribution will be matched and becomes $50.

Any donation to Worldwide Mission Tithes helps bring hope to people around the world! In 2020, contributions have supported:
  • COVID-19 crisis relief and oblation aid, including $100,500 to Haiti, Africa, Nepal, India, and Central and South America and, a total of $63,614 in oblation aid in the United States.
  • Ten chartered World Church teams with 136 members who provide guidance, advocacy, and education on Earth stewardship, diversity and inclusion, health and wholeness, spiritual formation, and peace and justice — among others.

Remember to Get the Word Out
Tell everyone about Giving Tuesday and consider forwarding this email with your fellow congregants, friends, and loved ones. Word of mouth is still incredibly effective!

Stay Up to Date
Updates will be posted on World Church Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts throughout the day on December 1st.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity!

With gratitude,

Community of Christ Canadian Marketing Team

Honduras Battered by Two
Hurricanes in Two Weeks

World Accord in Partnership with PRR Poised to Help

"So many people in Honduras are in REAL trouble with the back-to-back hurricanes of Eta and Lota", reports World Accord.

Al Wigood's heart is broken for the many people he has worked with and for over the last couple of decades and who have become his family. People are left stranded as roads are impassable. They are worried about how to feed their families and care for their needs.

Currently the airport at Tegucigalpa is closed due to extensive flooding. Many of the villages have been completely submerged and many mud slides have been triggered. The situation is horrendous on top of the pandemic.

"PRR is going to be helping those affected in their area. Not sure how yet", says World Accord. People are desperate for your help. Your donations will make a difference.

Community of Christ Oblation Aid for Honduras

Apostle Carlos Mejia in Honduras reports that Hurricane Eta damaged the northern part of the country 4 November, followed 17 November by Hurricane Iota that destroyed many roads and bridges throughout the country. Communication since has been unreliable, Mejia says.

The Presiding Bishopric indicates $40,000 in Community of Christ Oblation Aid has been sent to assist in response to the storm damage. Oblation aid is part of the Worldwide Mission budget.

"We had not yet woken up from Hurricane Eta when the other Hurricane Iota arrived. This was an experience never lived for some generations," Mejia said.

"Several of our members and many families in general lost everything. Reaching some neighborhood communities is like reaching a war zone, everything is [destroyed]. At this moment there are many places that the water is still flooding the houses and it is impossible to reach these people with help.

"Thank you to the entire church for your support in these difficult times," he concluded in a recent message to International Headquarters.

Supporting Worldwide Mission Tithes helps meet needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic, storms, and fires around the world.

May we remember and pray for all those affected by these tragedies.

Conducting Congregational Business Meetings via Video Conference

11/19/2020

Picture
Please note that the meeting time has been revised from previous announcement (see below).

We have all encountered a year of anything but normalcy. Our calendar of typical events has morphed through new lenses into different forms and often diverse new audiences. We are on a learning curve that is accelerated by the critical mass of so many traversing newness simultaneously. Just some reflections I am encountering.

We still have congregational business meetings to conduct as 2021 approaches and I suspect for most it will be on-line using Zoom. In order to prepare Pastoral teams to navigate the online logistics and voting, we are offering a workshop in November. This will simplify the process and acquaint leadership teams with the online skillsets to conduct a congregational business meeting for essential operations of the congregation.

The date selected is Sunday, November 22 at 3 p.m. Pastoral teams are invited to attend. This will enable each congregation to enter the New Year with leadership confirmed and finances reported and adjusted in this period of church building closures. Of course, we recognize that on-line encounters have remained a blessing in our lives. Please confirm your attendance by emailing Melissa Freer. Thanks.
