Creating spaces where children feel seen and supported

I had the privilege of attending my grandson’s school talent show recently, and it left a lasting impression on me.

About 500 children from kindergarten through grade eight assembled. Many stepped onto the stage and when they did, they shared their talents with remarkable courage. Some sang, others played instruments, some danced, and others performed gymnastics. There was a wide range of experience—some polished, some just beginning—but every single performance carried something meaningful.

What stood out most wasn’t perfection, but bravery. A few children performed right after particularly strong acts, which could easily intimidate anyone, yet they stepped forward with confidence and gave their best. In a world that often demands flawlessness, it was refreshing to witness such authenticity.

Even more powerful was the atmosphere in the room—one of respect, encouragement, and genuine appreciation for every performer. Each child was seen, supported, and celebrated.

It reminded me of our camping programs, where similar values take root: building confidence, nurturing courage, and creating space for everyone to participate and grow, where they also experience lifelong sacred connection. That is why I so strongly value our camping programs.

Experiences like this leave me hopeful. When children are given the chance to be vulnerable and are met with kindness and affirmation, they grow into individuals who value inclusion and lift others up. That kind of environment doesn’t just shape better individuals—it shapes a better world.

I’m grateful to have witnessed such joy and humanity.

The unseen ministry of camp cooks

I recently had the privilege of hosting a Zoom gathering called “Calling All Cooks.” As I listened to the challenges, creative workarounds, and sharing of best practices, I was deeply humbled by the depth of ministry these too-often unsung heroes provide within our camping communities.

Darlene Kent graciously agreed to share the wealth of knowledge she has gathered over many years of cooking at camps. It became clear that the thoughtfulness behind meal planning goes far beyond simply creating a menu. Camp cooks collaborate closely with directors, carefully considering schedules, activities, the group they are feeding, and the rhythm of each day.

Respecting food sensitivities is only the beginning. There are countless unseen details that contribute to a successful camp meal. Challenges you might never consider—like sourcing, transporting, and safely preparing food for 150 people on time—become significant logistical hurdles. These cooks rely on volunteers to assist with tasks such as prepping vegetables or setting out desserts, yet they carry the ultimate responsibility with grace and dedication.

When I attended the funeral of Irene Jackson earlier this year, we heard how her years of cooking ministry at Erie Beach left lasting impressions and created meaningful memories for so many. Her legacy is a powerful reminder that this work is not just about food—it is about care, community, and connection.

This year, some individuals are stepping into this role for the very first time—kudos to each of them. Others are walking alongside new cooks as mentors, passing on wisdom, encouragement, and practical skills that will sustain this ministry into the future.

To all who serve in this way, thank you. Your ministry nourishes far more than bodies—you nourish spirits, build community, and create sacred moments around the table. And to those who enjoy the fruits of their efforts, please show your appreciation.

Twelve moments from camp that inspired me last year

Over the past year, I had the opportunity to meet people in camps across Canada. Each camp setting and camping experience is unique, yet the overarching vision of
restoring persons to healthy or righteous relationship with God, others, themselves, and the earth (Doctrine and Covenants 163:2b) is at the heart of every camp experience. Perhaps this shared purpose is part of what continually draws us back to camp.

As I reflect on the year, many moments stand out—each one a reminder of the beauty and diversity within our camping communities. Creativity and care show up everywhere. Here are some of the things that inspired me this year:

  • Junior camp-in-a-camp kids proudly cleaning tables
  • A youth confidently leading a trivia night
  • Sharing a campfire blanket while making gluten-free s’mores
  • An educational session on gender/sex being openly and respectfully received
  • A class session using artwork to bring meaningful ideas to life
  • Thoughtful attention given to all age groups
  • A six year old giving KP instructions
  • A senior delighting everyone with a silly skit
  • Learning old camp songs with new lyrics
  • Countless special moments captured in photos that serve as treasured memories
  • Artistic, meaningful and so very diverse worship centers
  • Treasured meditation moments using unusual music choices

All these experiences were possible because of dedicated leadership teams whose passion shapes their camp programs in unique and meaningful ways. The director serves almost as a maestro, ensuring all players know their parts and the resulting symphony is masterful.

Supporting camp leaders requires not only respect for their individual gifts but also a commitment to ensuring they are not overwhelmed. I invite you to ask a camp director how they are doing. Perhaps even offer to help with something. Your support—through prayers, ideas, volunteer time, and encouraging words—helps guide them in building inclusive, spirit-led, and intergenerational camping ministries that create sacred communities of safety and welcome.

Onward together in teaching love for one another!

From silence to confidence: what we learned at the Noronto Sr. High Camp

By Alfredo Zelaya, Sr High Camp Community Director

This year at Sr. High Camp, we embarked on a powerful journey through the theme Unmuted—a call to find our voice, use it well, and understand the impact of what we say and what we choose to listen to.

We began in silence, exploring the fears and insecurities that often cause us to mute ourselves. Through daily themes like Volume Up, Echo, and Mic Check, we built courage and learned how vulnerability, honesty, and listening are all part of authentic self-expression. Campers were challenged to own their stories, name the voices that shape them, and use their words to speak truth—not just for themselves, but for others.

Throughout the week, we wove together personal growth, spiritual reflection, and a deepening sense of community, all within a vibrant atmosphere of connection and joy. We explored the power of words to heal, to build up, and to unify through meaningful moments in small groups, morning Community Celebrations, and our deeply moving Reflect & Connect service.
Equally powerful were the community-building moments of laughter and play that brought us even closer: spirited House Cup challenges that fostered team spirit, corn roasting and music jamming at the beach-front party, late-night waffle runs, the legendary poutine party, and a Viking-themed banquet that turned mealtime into an epic celebration. These shared experiences created unforgettable memories and meaningful bonds.

Whether in quiet conversations or loud cheers, our campers stepped into confidence not because they had all the answers, but because they discovered their voices are valuable—and they belong.

This year also marked a continued season of growth for Sr. High Camp. With strong numbers and a vibrant, committed team of volunteer staff and LITs, we created a safe, joy-filled space where youth could reconnect with their inner voice and their calling as community builders and followers of Jesus.

By the end of the week, each camper carried home a “mic drop” message: a commitment to speak with purpose, live authentically, and contribute to communities of joy, hope, love, and peace. The sound of silence was replaced by the sound of unity, support, and newfound confidence.

We look ahead with excitement to the Thanksgiving Retreat (October 10–12), and eagerly anticipate returning to Sr. High Camp Noronto in August 2026. Until then, we remain Unmuted—voices raised in love, purpose, and a shared commitment to community building that moves beyond words into action.

Memories of camp. Let’s share the experience!

7/3/2024

A moment with your Mission Centre President is a tradition of the Canada West Mission Centre. This week we invite all members across Canada to share a moment with Vonda DenBoer, Canada East Mission Co-President.

Do you have fond memories of a camp? Whether it’s a treasured memory of something you experienced, those moments have shaped who you are today. Our camp experiences may be the only time we experience a sacred community. Camps are safe places. At camp, we make new friends and cherish time with old friends.

When I think back to my many camping experiences, I think of the people who made them special. I remember Don Arrowsmith teaching self-defence at a youth camp. He was even gracious enough to let me flip him, making me feel like I had mastered the art! I recall a Senior High camp at Monetville (before it was called Noronto) where we had so many youth that we had to sleep on the floor. I remember the long bus ride on a Badder school bus with Allan Badder driving us to our first youth camp. I remember the amazing Rod McLean, who directed that Jr. High camp at Port Elgin campground. I was overwhelmed, exhausted, and homesick, and he was so kind and understanding.

It was at a youth camp that I first learned how to waterski, canoe, practise archery, perform self-defence, and create crafts with yarn and nails. I learned how to make a logbook and many other things. I forged friendships that continue to this day. It was at a youth camp where I first had the courage to stand and bear testimony. It was also at a youth camp where I first experienced a manifestation of the spirit that brought me to tears.

I am grateful for those who made it possible: counsellors, teachers, camp pastors, camp directors, and camp nurses. They didn’t just do their jobs; they created an environment for a sacred community to manifest. I remember being accepted and loved, encouraged, and challenged. Perhaps you have served as a counsellor, teacher, director, pastor, nurse, or lifeguard. I hope you have some amazing stories and that you share them to encourage others.

We want to invite every child to encounter an amazing camp experience, but we need your help. Please spread the word about your wonderful experiences and build up the excitement. If you’re able, why not help support kids going to camp? Maybe they need a ride, maybe they need financial help, or maybe they just need someone to encourage them. Let’s support our camps and create opportunities for every child to experience a sacred community.
