The Victoria Congregation was started by some church members who relocated from the Prairie Provinces to Victoria to work in the shipyards in 1940. From 1940 to 1945 the Victoria Saints worshipped in the Lutheran church on Princess and Chambers Streets. Meetings were then held in homes until 1948 when the Sons of Norway Hall on Hillside Avenue was rented. Three lots were purchased at the corner of Jutland and Burnside in May 1963. A sod turning ceremony was held and Pastor Henry Piedt turned the first sod. The young men of the branch did a lot of the work on the building with help from men from Chilliwack and the Vancouver area. The first service in our own building took place on Christmas Eve, 1964. The dedication service was held on June 15, 1975. |
